Engineers looking for an overall uniform mat finish should consider bead blasting or tumble finish.
Bead blasting is similar to sand blasting except employing glass beads. The process does not typically remove material but gives a component a consistent overall look. In general, it will blend and smooth machine marks.
The process works best on exterior features and large pockets. It is not applicable for internals such as small holes.
Tumbling utilizes a vibrating or revolving bucket combined with abrasive media. Parts are typically allowed to move relative to the media for a predetermined period. The end result is a multi directional mat pattern. This process will also break edges and/or deburr components with the proper setup.
